WIS-SIMS Research Center for Tissue Regeneration

  • Director: Prof. Jeong Kyo Yoon
  • Research Period: 2016. 8.10 ~ 2022.1.9

Stem cell-based therapy is emerging rapidly as a promising treatment strategy in regenerative medicine. While significant progresses in developing a conceptual framework for therapy and uncovering many aspects of stem cell biology have been made in last decade or so, there are still many unresolved complications to apply stem cell therapies in the clinical setup.

Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in Israel and Soonchunhyang Institute of Medi-bio Science (SIMS) recognize the need for and the benefits of international research collaboration to improve regenerative medicine and stem cell research and facilitate to convert research discovery into effective therapies that can benefit the patients.

SIMS and WIS agreed to establish WIS-SIMS Research Center for Tissue Regeneration led by Dr. Jeong Kyo Yoon (SIMS) and Tsvee Lapidot (WIS). The center was instituted in August 2016 with a funding support from Korean National Research Foundation. A major goal of the Center is to develop the research center of excellence in stem cell biology and tissue regeneration through active research and educational collaborations between the investigators at SIMS and WIS. Key center activities include;

  • Develop and support the research collaboration projects in stem cell and tissue regeneration between SIMS and WIS investigators
  • The core investigators develop and support a short and long-term student/staff/faculty exchange program to facilitate research collaboration and educational interaction
  • Build an international research network through symposium, conference and workshop

The investigators has been involved in the center activities are Drs. Hyeog Young Kwon, Jaewon Shim, Man Ryul Lee, Yong Sung Hwang at SIMS and Drs. Eldad Tzahor, Irit Sagi, Jacob Hanna and Orly Reiner. Ultimately, the Center will spearhead on development and commercialization of the innovative tissue regeneration technology based on stem cell research. We will achieve this goal by strategically aligning the specialized research capacity and manpower at SIMS to the world-class biology research capacity and infrastructure of WIS and systematically implementing the business strategies practiced in YEDA, a tech transfer entity for WIS.
