6. Abstract :

The ability to synthesize new proteins in the brain following stimulation plays a key role in memory formation. Recently, it becomes clear that new proteins produced locally in neurons can regulate the structure of brain cells. Various neurological disorders including Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease show structural changes in the brain cells. However, understanding the link between local protein synthesis and structural changes in the brain cells is still limited. Continued existence of this gap represents an important problem because, until it is filled, understanding the molecular link between dysregulation of local protein synthesis and pathological changes in the brain cells that leads to neurological diseases will remain largely elusive. In this talk, I am going to discuss our recent findings on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie local protein synthesis regulating the structure of the brain cells.
